LIBRARY

The Society has a comprehensive library containing books on a variety of astronomical subjects and a plethora of periodicals, which can be borrowed by members.

Armchair astronomers rejoice!
You can borrow books of your choice
From the ASG in Glasgow fair
Whose library shelves are never bare
Those winter evenings are so cold
So warm them with some tales well-told
But it's not just books making up the list;
There are glossy mags you thought I'd missed
Indeed, they are an eclectic mix
Some, I am told, even have fab pics
So who should you see for books on the sky?
Our Librarian Stephen Reilly is the guy!

TELESCOPE HIRE

ACREROAD.JPG (43809 bytes)

The Society's telescope, a 4 1/2" Newtonian Reflector, is available for hire by members, for £5 per calendar month.

Further details are available from Martin Donoghue on (0141) 637 5367.

Martin would be interested if those hiring the telescope could keep a logbook of any observations that they might make - subject to the prevailing weather conditions.

OBSERVATORY ACCESS

We were indebted to Dr Graham Woan for granting us access to the University of Glasgow Observatory during the 2002-2003 session. It is situated in Acre Road, just off Maryhill Road (opposite the West of Scotland Science Park). Meetings are held once a month (October to March) on THURSDAY evenings, from 7.30 p.m. until 9.30 p.m. Confirmed dates the 2007 - 2008 Session are:

4th Oct, 1st Nov, 6th Dec 2007; 10th Jan, 7th Feb, 6th Mar 2008

Joint meetings with Helensburgh Astronomical Society will be held on:

11th Oct, 8th Nov, 13th Dec, 2007; 7th Feb, 13th March 2008

If the sky is clear, we can observe with the computer-guided 16” Meade Schmidt-Cassegrain reflector—a perk only available to ASG members! On cloudy nights we run workshops, show slides/videos, give talks, the latest astronomical images are downloaded from the Internet, or we have the use of the small planetarium. Tea and coffee are available for a small charge. Regular bus services from the city centre should take you to the stop just before the roundabout opposite Acre Road (FirstBus No. 119, No. 109 or No.40 from Hope Street). Trains also run from Queen Street High Level to Maryhill Station, from where the observatory is only 10 minutes’ walk away. Further information on public transport can be obtained using the links on the 'Links' page.  Just remember to wrap up warmly as it can become quite cold in the dome!
